Tanzania Bans Foreign Ownership of Slot Machines and Betting Shops to Boost Local Entrepreneurship

Tanzania has implemented a ban on foreign ownership of slot machines and betting shops in a bid to regulate the gambling sector and boost revenue. The new regulations, introduced through government notice no. 487A, restrict non-citizens from owning gambling machines outside licensed casinos.

The crackdown on illegal operations has led to the apprehension of 183 individuals and the imposition of fines or deportation. The country has experienced substantial growth in the gambling sector, with revenue increasing from TZS 131.99 billion to TZS 260.21 billion, creating 30,000 jobs.

Local ownership is being prioritized, with concerns raised about foreign monopolies, particularly from China. The government is also taking measures to combat underage gambling and unlicensed operations, with warnings issued to the public.

Tanzania aims to modernize the sector and address social responsibilities associated with gambling.
