NUT Urges Government Action on Teacher Welfare and Security
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called on governments at all levels to prioritize teachers' welfare, recruitment, working conditions, professional development, and security. This demand was made during the national celebration of the 2026 World Teachers’ Day in Abuja, marking the 60th anniversary of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.
NUT National President Comrade Audu Titus Amba, represented by Elder Kalu Kizito, stressed that teachers should be recognized as nation builders deserving of proper remuneration and support. Key issues include the delay in implementing a special salary structure approved for teachers in 2022 and ongoing teacher shortages, particularly in rural areas.
The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) also advocated for a distinct salary structure for teachers. In Gombe, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya announced plans to recruit more teachers, while in Akwa Ibom, Governor Umo Eno approved the recruitment of 2,000 teachers, emphasizing that passing a computer-based test does not guarantee employment.
