Teachers Oppose Exemption from UTME for Education Candidates

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has expressed strong disapproval of the federal government's decision to exempt candidates seeking admission to colleges of education from the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). NUT President Comrade Audu Titu Amba stated that allowing candidates who cannot secure admission through the UTME to enter the teaching profession undermines the quality of education.

He emphasized that teaching should attract the brightest minds and not be a last resort for those unable to gain admission to universities. The NUT warned that this policy could lead to a decline in educational standards.

During the 21st Century Teacher Initiative held in Abuja, it was noted that teachers currently lack essential digital skills necessary for modern education. Dr.

Tunji Alausa and Mr. Iyabo Ali discussed the initiative aimed at equipping teachers with the competencies needed for the digital age.

Dr. Ronk Soyombo from the TRCN remarked that outdated teaching methods no longer meet the demands of contemporary education.
