Tension in NASS Over Election Result Transmission Methods

Tensions heightened as the National Assembly Committee convened to discuss the transmission of election results. The committee, consisting of 24 members, is split between the Senate's version and the House's version of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, particularly Section 60(3).

The Senate's proposal, which allows for manual transmission of results, has sparked controversy, leading to an emergency session last week. The All Progressives Congress (APC), which controls the Senate, is pushing for its version, while opposition parties argue that the Senate's stance undermines electoral transparency.

Former Inter-Party Advisory Council Chairman Seriak Dickson publicly supported the House's version, emphasizing the importance of real-time transmission. The committee's discussions reflect the political dynamics, with APC holding 80 seats in the Senate compared to the opposition's 25.

Critics, including Labour Party's Chinedu Okafor, warn that flexibility in transmission methods could lead to manipulation, while APC members defend their position as reflective of Nigeria's infrastructural realities.
