Surge in Counterfeit Goods Poses Health Risks in Nigeria

Nigeria is experiencing a significant rise in counterfeit and substandard products, affecting various sectors, including food, medicine, and beverages. This issue has led to serious health risks, exemplified by the recent deaths of 29 individuals in Ondo State linked to a locally brewed alcoholic drink.

Taiwo Adegoroye, the chairman of Odigbo local government area, stated that a task force is actively enforcing a ban on the sale of herbal drinks. The proliferation of counterfeit goods is exacerbated by the higher costs of genuine products, pushing consumers towards cheaper, fake alternatives.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is aware of the counterfeit crisis but is overwhelmed, having received 225 complaints in August alone. NAFDAC's Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, reported that the agency seized 7,210 counterfeit products between May and July 2026.

Despite some convictions, the response is deemed inadequate given the scale of the problem, which is compounded by corruption and inadequate controls at ports and regulatory agencies.
