Nigeria's Alarming Stillbirth Rates Demand Urgent Action

A recent report by Nigeria Health Watch highlights the alarming prevalence of stillbirths in Nigeria, which ranks among the top six countries globally for this issue. The report indicates that Nigeria accounts for 36% of stillbirths in Sub-Saharan Africa, with an estimated 2.6 million stillbirths occurring annually in six countries, including Nigeria.

Two-thirds of these stillbirths occur in rural areas where access to skilled birth attendants, such as midwives and physicians, is limited. The report identifies five main causes of stillbirths, including complications during childbirth, maternal infections, and disorders such as pre-eclampsia and diabetes.

It emphasizes the link between poverty and stillbirth rates, particularly in low-income rural areas. The report calls for urgent action from health authorities to improve maternal and child health services, particularly in rural communities where healthcare facilities are lacking.

It stresses the need for a collaborative effort among federal, state, and local governments to strengthen primary health care systems and address existing gaps.
