Renewed Xenophobic Attacks on Nigerians in South Africa

The recent resurgence of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa has alarmed Nigerian officials, who are calling for the protection of their citizens. The Dudula Movement has been instrumental in reigniting anti-immigrant sentiments, leading to violent protests and demands for the removal of illegal immigrants.

South Africa is home to approximately four million documented foreign nationals, with Nigerians numbering around 400,000. The situation reflects a long-standing pattern of xenophobic violence in South Africa, which has persisted since 2017.

Tensions escalated recently when protests erupted in Eastern Cape Province against the alleged violation of South African sovereignty by the installation of an Igbo king, Kugompo. This incident triggered significant backlash, including property destruction and looting.

Nigerian officials, including the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), are urging citizens to respect the cultural traditions of their host nation to avoid further conflict.
