Nigeria's Honeybee Crisis Threatens Food Security Urgently

Nigeria is at a critical juncture regarding its food security due to a honeybee crisis, with a recent survey indicating an average colony loss rate of approximately 21% across nine sub-Saharan African countries, including Nigeria. Local apiculture faces unique vulnerabilities, particularly in Benu and Edo states, where outdated management practices and poor record-keeping are prevalent.

Environmental factors such as bush burning and monoculture farming are further exacerbating the situation. Roi Funkhous, a beekeeper from West Virginia, highlights the alarming ecological breakdown affecting commercial beekeeping in the U.S., with average losses of 60-62 hives expected during the 2024-2025 period.

To combat this crisis, Nigeria must establish a dedicated fund for apiculture research, improve pest management practices, and tighten pesticide regulations. Additionally, integrating apiculture into national agricultural policy frameworks and promoting agroforestry are essential steps to safeguard this vital sector.
