IPOB Urges IGP Disu to Halt Prosecution of Protesters

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called on the newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, to discontinue the prosecution of individuals who participated in protests advocating for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the group's leader. IPOB's legal counsel argues that these individuals have not committed any crime under Nigerian law, as their actions fall within the constitutional rights of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.

The appeal highlights a contradiction between the new police leadership's public commitment to uphold human rights and the ongoing legal actions against the protesters. IPOB's lawyer, Ejimakor, emphasized that the prosecution sends a negative signal to the public and undermines trust in law enforcement.

The group insists that dropping the charges would demonstrate true respect for the rule of law and human rights. Despite assurances from the Nigerian police force to uphold fundamental freedoms, the case against the protesters continues, raising concerns about civic engagement in Nigeria.
