NCC Launches Phone Approval Verification System in Nigeria

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has implemented a device verification system effective from October 7, 2026, allowing Nigerians to check if their phones are approved for use on local mobile networks. Consumers can verify their devices by dialing *315# or visiting the NCC's Device Checker portal.
Edoyemi Ogoh, the NCC’s Director of Technical Standards and Network Integrity, stated that this initiative serves as a consumer protection measure, ensuring devices meet required technical standards. The NCC has already registered about 231 million devices in Nigeria, which were automatically verified under the new system.
Consumers are advised to verify the status of used phones before purchase, as previous use on a Nigerian network does not guarantee compliance. Devices that do not meet the requirements may be denied access to mobile networks.
The NCC has clarified that the verification system will not monitor users' personal communications.
