Nigeria's Urgent Call to Halt Deforestation Crisis

Nigeria is experiencing alarming deforestation rates, losing approximately 400,000 hectares of forest annually due to illegal logging and urbanization. The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), represented by Olusola Oduguwa and Dr.

Joseph Onoja, has marked this year's International Day of Forests by condemning these activities and calling for urgent solutions to safeguard the country's natural assets. The NCF highlights that Nigeria has lost nearly 90% of its original forest cover, with less than 10% remaining intact, underscoring the critical need for large-scale restoration and sustainable forest management.

The foundation warns that without coordinated action, the long-term economic and ecological costs will be severe. Additionally, the NCF notes that Nigeria loses about 350,000 hectares of land yearly to desert encroachment and faces significant challenges in providing alternative energy sources, which exacerbates pressure on forest reserves.

The NCF advocates for tree planting initiatives and stronger enforcement of environmental regulations to combat these issues.
