Tinubu Directs Ministry to Revamp Nigeria's Agrifood System

President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to develop a long-term, bankable, and implementable roadmap to enhance Nigeria's agrifood system. This directive was announced by Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, during an agrifood systems working group meeting in Abuja.

The roadmap is part of a comprehensive 10-year agrifood system strategy and action plan designed to transform Nigeria's agricultural sector. Kyari noted that the strategy was formulated through extensive consultations across the six geopolitical zones to ensure broad stakeholder participation.

The plan will be presented for stakeholder adoption before being submitted to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for approval. Additionally, ActionAid Nigeria's food systems specialist, Azubike Nwokoye, raised concerns about the low public investment in agriculture, revealing that the combined agricultural budget for 2026 is only 4.58%, significantly below the 10% target set by the African Union.

Nwokoye emphasized the need for better prioritization of agricultural investments.
