Tinubu Disagrees with Bishops on Economy and Security

During a meeting on July 28, 2026, at the State House in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu expressed disagreement with the assessment of the economy and security concerns presented by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria. Archbishop Emeritus John Onaiyekan stated that the bishops conveyed their message about the nation's struggles, particularly the economy's impact on the poor.

Onaiyekan noted that Tinubu insisted his administration was on the right track, despite the bishops' concerns. He emphasized that the bishops had no political ambitions but felt a duty to address the realities facing Nigerians.

Onaiyekan also criticized the lack of truth-telling within the government and defended the bishops' warning against a one-party dominant state, asserting that democracy requires credible elections. He urged reforms to enhance public confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission, which he argued could not be seen as neutral while its leadership is appointed by the President.
