Tinubu Grants Posthumous Pardons to Historical Figures

President Bola Tinubu has granted posthumous pardons to late Major General Mamman Jiya Vatsa, nationalist Herbert Macaulay, and the Ogoni Nine, among others. The pardon, announced during the National Council of State meeting in Abuja, signifies a significant act of national reconciliation and historical redress.

General Vatsa, a poet and former minister, was executed in 1986 for treason during General Ibrahim Babangida's military regime. Herbert Macaulay, a prominent nationalist, was unjustly convicted by the British colonial government in 1913.

The broader exercise of presidential mercy also extended to several other former convicts to facilitate their reintegration into society, provided they have shown remorse and reformation.
