Tinubu Orders Resignation of Appointees Before 2027 Elections

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a directive requiring all political appointees in his administration who intend to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign from their positions by March 31, 2026. This directive affects a broad category of officials, including ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal aides, directors general, and chief executives of federal agencies and parastatals.

The order was conveyed through a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, signed by George Akum, and confirmed by Permanent Secretary Ibrahim Abubakar Kana. The directive aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which mandates public office holders to step down when seeking electoral positions to prevent the abuse of office and ensure a fair electoral process.

Tinubu emphasized the importance of strict adherence to this directive to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure credible elections as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
