Tinubu Rules Out Fuel Subsidy Return, Defends May 2023 Removal

President Bola Tinubu has firmly shut down prospects for reestablishing fuel subsidies, reiterating his commitment to the subsidy elimination he carried out on his inaugural day in May 2023. At an event hosted by the City Boy Movement in Abuja during mid-October, Tinubu rejected any possibility that Nigeria might reverse this policy, invoking a biblical reference to characterise such reversal as economically destructive and retrospective in nature.
The President's comments appear aimed at opposition figures, notably former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, who have vowed to reintroduce subsidies as part of their 2027 election platform. Tinubu contended that Nigeria faced bankruptcy before he eliminated fuel subsidies and that bringing them back would drive the nation into financial ruin.
He portrayed the removal as a decisive departure from economic strategies that had failed, not as a campaign pledge open to revision. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele bolstered the government's stance by signalling that reintroducing the subsidy would inflict considerable economic harm.
Oyedele's warnings, based on available reports, highlighted that the policy would encourage capital flight, damage the naira's strength, and create a paradox whereby Nigerians would shoulder higher pump prices even with the subsidy restored. Such messaging from the Finance Minister suggests alignment within the administration on the permanence of this choice.
Tinubu defended the elimination as central to his larger economic transformation programme since entering office. Available sources indicate his address occurred at a gathering aligned with campaign objectives, wherein the City Boy Movement and associated organisations leveraged the occasion to build momentum for the 2027 presidential election.
By taking an uncompromising stance on subsidy restoration, the President conveys that his administration considers the reform beyond negotiation across different political administrations.
