Tinubu Proposes Overhaul of Nigeria's Drug Laws in 2026

President Bola Tinubu has requested the Nigerian Senate to repeal the Indian Hemp Act and the existing National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Act as part of a comprehensive overhaul of the country's drug laws. This proposal was presented in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a plenary session.

The proposed NDLEA Bill, 2026, aims to repeal the NDLEA Act, Cap. N30, and the Indian Hemp Act, Cap.

I6, both from the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. The new legislation seeks to establish a consolidated legal framework for the enforcement of laws against the cultivation, processing, trafficking, and use of illicit drugs, while also empowering the NDLEA to investigate individuals suspected of drug-related activities.

The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for further action.
