Tinubu Proposes Repeal of Nigeria Police Trust Fund Act

On April 1, 2026, President Bola Tinubu sent a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abba, requesting the repeal and re-enactment of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund Act. The proposed legislation aims to strengthen the oversight and operational efficiency of the Nigeria Police Force.

Tinubu emphasized the necessity of reviewing the existing framework to meet current security demands. The Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) Act, originally established to provide dedicated funding for training, equipping, and welfare of police personnel, has faced challenges such as chronic underfunding and lack of transparency.

The proposed amendments intend to improve resource management and align funding structures with contemporary security threats, including terrorism and organized crime. Tinubu urged the House for expedited consideration of the bill, highlighting its potential to enhance the operational capacity and accountability of the Nigeria Police Force.
