Tinubu Proposes State Police Amendment Bill to Senate

President Bola Tinubu has sent a constitutional amendment bill to the National Assembly to create a legal framework for state police across Nigeria. This move follows his previous call in February for constitutional amendments to enable states to play a greater role in territorial security.

Tinubu described the reform as essential to address threats from terrorism and banditry. He emphasized the need for decisive action against those sponsoring these threats, stating that no mercy would be shown to enemies of the state.

In the past year, approximately 13,000 terrorists have been neutralized, and there has been a significant reduction in terror-related deaths compared to previous years. The proposal for state police has gained momentum in recent months, as the National Assembly advances the constitutional amendment process aimed at decentralizing police power to the states.
