Tinubu's Return Sparks Controversy Over Security Measures

President Bola Tinubu returned to Nigeria on September 29, 2026, after a working vacation in Europe that began on August 30. His departure from Paris was confirmed by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, and he was expected to arrive at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos later that evening.

During his stay in Europe, Tinubu engaged with French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bollore. The President chose to return through Lagos to honor the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, a key figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement.

However, his return led to significant movement restrictions around airports in Abuja and Lagos, with military and police personnel setting up roadblocks, causing delays for travelers. Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, affected by these restrictions, criticized the scale of the security operation, questioning the necessity of such measures for the return of a President he described as having a "disastrous regime.".
