Civil Society Groups Urge Tinubu to Tackle Hardship

Civil society organizations, including the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Transparency International Chapter in Nigeria, and the Resource Center for Human Rights Education (CHRICED), have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize pressing issues such as economic hardship, insecurity, and accountability as he returns to Nigeria from a working vacation. Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, CISLAC's Media Manager, stated that the focus should shift from political ceremonies to the realities faced by Nigerians, including rising living costs and declining purchasing power.

He urged the government to implement measures to lower food and transportation costs, enhance agricultural production, and create sustainable jobs. Additionally, CISLAC demanded accountability for the deaths of 37 individuals in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), insisting on a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible.

Kolawole Omoniyi of CHRICED echoed the need for specific measures to alleviate the burden of high fuel prices on workers and private-sector employees.
