Nigeria's Power Generation Up 6.55% in Q4 2025

According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), total power generation in Nigeria rose by 6.55% in the fourth quarter of 2025, reaching 9,831.58 GWh compared to 9,227.57 GWh in the preceding quarter. This positive trajectory is attributed to robust energy consumption and improvements in the energy off-take from the primary grid.

However, the sector continues to struggle with significant financial inefficiencies, with a recorded total energy bill loss of 174.12 billion naira during the quarter. The report indicated that 28 grid-connected power plants generated an average of 4,452.71 MWh, while distribution companies (DISCOs) faced substantial financial leakage amounting to 969.19 billion naira.

The overall collection efficiency dropped to 79.36%, with technical and commercial losses spiking to 34.90%. The NERC also reported a concerning safety record, with 46 electrical accidents resulting in 17 severe injuries and 26 fatalities, prompting a commitment to enforce stricter health and safety standards across the sector.
