NAFDAC Alerts on Toxic Pesticide Residues in Beans

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning regarding pesticide residues in beans that exceed safe limits, urging farmers to avoid the misuse of agrochemicals. Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, expressed these concerns during a recent statement in Lagos.
A market study revealed that residues of pyrethroids and dimethoates were found above permissible levels. Although NAFDAC does not regulate raw agricultural products, it monitors them to track pesticide usage.
Adeyeye reiterated the agency's ban on pesticides containing paraquat, chlorpyrifos, and atrazine, stating that as of January 1, 2026, these chemicals can no longer be legally manufactured, imported, distributed, sold, or used in Nigeria. She cautioned against using dimethoate for post-harvest preservation of beans, highlighting that while it is accepted for field treatment, it is ineffective for weevil prevention after harvest.
NAFDAC's surveillance continues to uncover banned products in circulation despite the prohibition.
