Trump Claims US Controls Strait of Hormuz Amid Shipping Decline

On a recent post on Truth Social, US President Donald Trump asserted that the United States has "total control" over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil supplies. This statement came as shipping traffic through the strait fell to its lowest level in a week, with only eight vessels tracked on a Tuesday, compared to a 10-day average of about 12 vessels.

Prior to the ongoing war with Iran, approximately 130 ships passed through daily. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has adjusted its 2026 oil demand forecast downward due to the prolonged closure of the strait, which has raised concerns over global oil supplies and energy prices.

Brent crude was trading at $89.08 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate stood at $83.53. Iran rejected Trump's claims, insisting the strait remains blocked until its conditions are met.

The situation has escalated with renewed attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, further complicating global trade routes.
