Trump Signs New Sanctions Against Cuba Amid Economic Crisis

On Friday, Donald Trump signed an executive order that imposes new sanctions on Cuba, specifically targeting individuals operating in key sectors of the country's economy. This measure is part of an intensified policy by the Trump administration to increase pressure on Havana, which is currently grappling with a severe economic downturn exacerbated by disrupted oil supplies from Venezuela.

The sanctions will apply to individuals across major sectors, including energy, defense, metals, mining, financial services, and security. Additionally, Cuban officials accused of serious human rights violations and corruption will face sanctions, including travel bans preventing entry into the United States.

The executive order further authorizes punitive actions against foreign banks and financial institutions that conduct transactions with sanctioned individuals and entities, broadening the scope of restrictions beyond Cuba. This latest move comes despite recent diplomatic engagements between Washington and Havana, including a visit by senior U.S. officials to the island in April.
