Trump Rejects Iran's Seven-Day Plan to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

Donald Trump, the US President, has declined Iran's offer to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz by the seventh day following acceptance. During the United Nations General Assembly, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi unveiled this initiative, contingent on Washington lifting its naval blockade, easing oil sanctions, and consenting to a ceasefire.

On Saturday, Trump dismissed the offer as unacceptable. Tensions between the US and Iran have intensified dramatically, especially after military operations involving Israel around the Strait of Hormuz.

This critical waterway transports substantial quantities of oil and liquefied natural gas to markets globally. When passage through this route faces disruption, energy prices climb worldwide, affecting economies that depend on consistent fuel availability.

Iran's approach, according to Trump, reflects mounting economic duress rather than genuine negotiating intent. Washington has tightened financial sanctions on Iranian banks and airlines, limiting Tehran's participation in global financial institutions and aviation sectors.

Escalating pressure from this economic campaign was noted by Treasury officials. While Trump expressed openness to deal-making broadly, he found Iran's particular demands untenable given present conditions.

Yet Iranian authorities have signalled their continued interest in dialogue. Araghchi emphasized that resolving Washington's dispute with Tehran hinges on pursuing diplomatic channels as the sole workable mechanism, though an official US response has not materialized.
