Uganda to Evacuate 746 Citizens from South Africa

The Ugandan government has announced plans to evacuate 746 citizens from South Africa following a month of escalating xenophobic violence. The decision was made after President Yoweri Museveni directed relevant government agencies to arrange the evacuation for Ugandans wishing to return home due to worsening security concerns.

The evacuation exercise is expected to commence within the next few days, as stated by Haruna Kasolo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. So far, 746 Ugandan nationals have voluntarily registered for evacuation, with many already having left South Africa on their own before a reported deadline of June 30.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating the evacuation with the Prime Minister's office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Ministry of Works and Transport, alongside the Uganda High Commission in South Africa. The evacuation will include the issuance of emergency travel documents and will be facilitated by Uganda Airlines, which will operate special charter flights at the government's expense.
