UK Introduces New English Proficiency Requirement for Work Visas from 2026, Impacting Nigerians

The UK government has announced a new policy effective from January 8, 2026, requiring migrants to attain a higher English proficiency level (B2 standard) for work visas. This move, part of efforts to reduce migration levels and enhance social integration, will primarily affect Nigerian migrants, including those on skilled worker visas.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that applicants will be tested in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The policy aims to control migration and ensure fair governance in the UK.
