UK Schools Close Early Amid Record Heatwave Forecast

A significant heatwave is affecting England, with temperatures forecasted to reach unprecedented levels of 40°C. The UK Met Office has issued a rare red extreme heat warning for Wednesday and Thursday, prompting authorities to take action to protect vulnerable populations.

As a result, numerous educational institutions have announced early closures, with full shutdowns for the remainder of the week being likely. The extreme heat is expected to shatter the long-standing June temperature record of 35.6°C established in 1976.

The lack of adequate cooling infrastructure in UK schools poses a major risk, as classrooms are unable to provide safe accommodations for students during such extreme weather. Stephen Belcher, the chief scientist at the UK Met Office, cited the inability to cool classrooms and the lack of outdoor shade as significant concerns.
