UK Excludes Two Groups from Standard Citizenship Route

The UK government has specified that two categories of individuals are excluded from applying for British nationality through the standard route, even if they hold a form of British nationality. These categories include citizens or nationals of another country and British overseas territories citizens.

The guidance indicates that simply holding a form of British nationality does not qualify an individual for the standard application process. For those who do not qualify under the standard route, an alternative pathway exists, which has its own qualifying conditions.

Applicants may be eligible to apply through this separate process if they meet at least one of four criteria: having lived in the UK for at least five years, having served as a Crown servant in roles such as the diplomatic service, overseas civil service, or armed forces, having a recognized connection with Gibraltar, or having lived in Hong Kong. The guidance also advises applicants to explore other potential routes for registration based on their individual backgrounds and histories.
