UK Trials Social Media Restrictions for Teenagers

On Wednesday, the UK government unveiled a pilot program aimed at restricting social media access for teenagers aged 13 to 17. This initiative will involve 300 young participants who will experience different levels of social media restrictions over six weeks, evaluating the effects on their schoolwork, sleep, and family life.

The trial includes complete app disablement for some, while others will have limited access to popular platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat. A control group will maintain unlimited access.

The pilot, led by Minister Liz Kendall, aims to gather evidence to inform future policies regarding social media use among minors. This move follows Australia's decision in December to become the first nation to impose a blanket ban on social media for individuals under 16.

The British government is also consulting the public on potential measures similar to Australia's, with a deadline for feedback set for May 26. Public figures, including actor Hugh Grant, have urged the government to support such prohibitions.
