UN Intensifies Ebola Response in Democratic Republic of Congo

The United Nations is ramping up efforts to contain the latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly in Ituri province, which remains the epicenter. UN spokesperson Stephan Dujarr provided updates on Thursday, detailing the delivery of emergency medical supplies, protective equipment, and logistical support.

The MONUSCO peacekeeping mission is playing a critical role by facilitating the rapid delivery of these supplies, including the provision of four light passenger vehicles and helicopter support for medical evacuations. The outbreak has led to 139 confirmed deaths and 600 suspected cases, with additional cases reported in Uganda, prompting a public health emergency.

The humanitarian situation in the region is deteriorating, marked by displacement and insecurity. The World Food Programme (WFP) is also involved, facilitating the transport of aid workers and essential cargo to hard-to-reach areas, while UNICEF is mobilizing supplies to support vulnerable children affected by the outbreak.
