UN Warns of Rising Violence Against Christians in Nigeria

The United Nations raised alarms regarding escalating violence against Christians and religious minorities in Nigeria, particularly in northern regions and the Middle Belt. A report from the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights (OHCHR) detailed alarming incidents of killings, abductions, and sexual violence linked to religious conversion.

The deteriorating security situation has allowed armed groups to operate with impunity, leading to horrific consequences for civilians. Victims have reported fear, trauma, and coercion, with women and girls facing heightened risks of abduction and forced marriage.

Specific cases highlighted include the abduction and sexual assault of girls in Borno State and a 16-year-old girl in Bauchi State whose hand was severed. The UN urged Nigerian authorities to protect vulnerable communities, conduct independent investigations, and prosecute those responsible for these human rights violations, warning that impunity could lead to further violence.
