UN Rights Chief Warns of AI Risks in Geneva Statement

On Monday, Volker Turk, the UN Rights Chief, issued a warning in Geneva regarding the existential risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI). He emphasized the need for stronger safeguards to ensure the safety and security of AI systems.

Turk urged countries hosting AI firms and those involved in their supply chains to agree on clear limits to mitigate potential harm. His office reported that failures involving powerful AI systems could disrupt critical infrastructure, communications, and democratic institutions.

Turk expressed concern that the rapid advancement of AI capabilities outpaces existing safeguards, citing incidents involving autonomous AI agents. He called for an urgent international effort to enhance AI safety before the risks become unmanageable.
