UN Appeals for Urgent Aid Amid Yemen's Hunger Crisis

The United Nations has issued a warning about the escalating humanitarian crisis in Yemen, stating that nearly 60% of the population is unable to afford basic food needs, a significant increase from just a month ago. Tom Fletcher, the UN Secretary-General's humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, made an urgent appeal for financial support to prevent the crisis from worsening.

According to reports, approximately five million people are facing severe food shortages, with a quarter of the population living in emergency food insecurity conditions. Fletcher emphasized that there has been no evidence of a decrease in humanitarian needs and urged the international community to provide greater financial assistance.

He also called for continued backing of peace initiatives and the release of detained UN personnel and aid workers, noting that 73 UN staff members and others are being arbitrarily detained by Houthi de facto authorities. Yemen's humanitarian emergency has been fueled by years of conflict, which began in 2014 and escalated into a full-scale civil war in 2015, severely disrupting food imports and damaging critical infrastructure.
