Uncertainty Over Nasir El-Rufai's Release Amid Family Mourning

The release of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai remains uncertain after his son, Bashir El-Rufai, deleted a statement on Twitter that initially announced his father's release from custody by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC). Bashir had described the move as an end to unlawful detention and expressed gratitude for the support shown to the family during this period.

However, the deletion of the post raised questions about the accuracy of the claim. Attempts to obtain clarification from the ICPC were unsuccessful, as spokesperson John Odei did not respond to inquiries.

The uncertainty follows the recent death of El-Rufai's mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, as disclosed by his grandson, Bello El-Rufai. Nasir El-Rufai is currently in custody due to allegations of economic and financial crimes, with the EFCC involved in his case.

A federal high court in Kaduna has adjourned proceedings related to the case until March 31, 2026, including a pending bail application. President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have expressed condolences to the El-Rufai family.
