Uncertainty for Niger's Ex-President Bazoum Amid Detention

Mohamed Bazoum, who assumed office on April 2, 2021, after winning 55 percent of the vote, is currently facing an uncertain future as he remains detained following a military coup led by General Abdourahamane Tiani on July 26, 2023. Despite being ousted, Bazoum has refused to resign, with his legal team arguing that the end of his official tenure is not recognized and that he is unable to perform his duties.

Political analyst Valeri Ntwali noted that Bazoum's legal standing has effectively ended due to the coup, which led to the suspension of Niger's constitution and the adoption of a new charter allowing the junta to remain in power for five years. The European Union has called for Bazoum's immediate release, which has sparked anger among Sahelian military governments.

Bazoum has been detained under strict conditions for nearly three years, with his wife also held in similar circumstances. The junta's leadership has maintained a strong stance against Western influence while resuming security cooperation talks with the United States.
