Nigerian Scholar Joins UNESCO Ethics Commission 2026-2029

Prof Chidi Oguamanam has been invited to serve as a member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO) World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology for a term spanning from 2026 to 2029. This appointment acknowledges Oguamanam’s significant contributions to the ethics of science and technology and related fields.

The invitation was communicated through a letter from UNESCO, which described the commission as an independent advisory body addressing major ethical challenges arising from scientific and technological advancements. Established in 1998, the commission aims to provide guidance and recommendations to UNESCO, member states, and other stakeholders on ethical issues, including those related to climate change and artificial intelligence.

Oguamanam's role will involve contributing to the development of reports and identifying emerging ethical challenges in science and technology. His appointment enhances Nigeria's representation in international discussions on these critical issues.
