UNICEF, Sokoto Launch N200m Nutrition Initiative

UNICEF and the Sokoto State Government have launched a N200 million nutrition initiative aimed at addressing severe malnutrition affecting approximately 260,000 children in the state. Dr.

Rownak Khan, UNICEF's Deputy Country Representative, praised Sokoto's commitment, noting the state's allocation of N100 million to match UNICEF's funding. This partnership employs a co-financing model to enhance child health through nutrition, immunization, and maternal care.

Recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics indicates alarming malnutrition rates, with 85% of children affected. Dr.

Abubakar Faruk, the State Commissioner for Health, highlighted the need for a multi-level accountability framework to ensure that supplies reach malnourished children and vulnerable pregnant women without diversion. The initiative aims to establish strict monitoring mechanisms at primary healthcare facilities.

The program is supported by global partners, including the Gates Foundation and FCDO, to ensure effective utilization of the nutrition fund and sustain efforts in combating malnutrition in Sokoto.
