US Deploys 200 Soldiers and Drones to Nigeria for Support

The United States has sent 200 soldiers and surveillance drones to Nigeria to assist in the country's fight against insurgency. According to Nigerian officials, the troops are not embedded with frontline units and will focus solely on intelligence gathering, without conducting airstrikes.

This military initiative includes a $100 million drone base in neighboring Niger, which will track militant activities across the Sahel region. However, the deployment may face challenges as Niger's military government has ordered U.S. forces to leave by 2024.

The U.S. defense officials confirmed that the drones are deployed alongside the troops at Nigeria's request, primarily to support intelligence gathering efforts. Major General Samaila Uba, the Director of Defense Information at Nigeria's Defense Headquarters, confirmed that U.S. assets are operating from the Bauchi airfield in the northeast state, emphasizing that the unit will play a strictly non-combat role, enabling operations led by Nigerian authorities.
