Unity Colleges Strike Disrupts Academic Activities in Nigeria

The ongoing indefinite strike by workers in Nigeria’s Unity Schools has disrupted academic activities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), preventing students from resuming as scheduled at Federal Government Colleges in Abuja. A visit to the Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC), Bwari, revealed a quiet environment with only staff vehicles entering the premises.

The school gate remained shut, and protesting workers displayed placards opposing the privatization of federal unity colleges. Parents, including Mrs. Gladys Bello, a member of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA), expressed disappointment, warning that privatization could impose additional financial burdens on families, making education unaffordable for many.

Students arriving at the Federal Government Boys College in Garki were left stranded outside, uncertain about the impact of the strike on their academic activities. The situation has raised concerns among parents and students alike, as they were expected to resume classes but are now faced with delays due to the industrial action.
