Uphold journalism ethics to safeguard democracy – Ex-NOA DG urges journalists

Former National Orientation Agency (NOA) Director-General, Mike Omeri, urged Nigerian journalists to uphold ethical values to ensure democracy thrives with a free, credible, and independent press. Speaking at a thanksgiving service in Lafia, Omeri emphasized that peace and unity in society are at risk when journalism is compromised by practices like accepting "brown envelope" payments or undue influence.

He highlighted the importance of media independence in sustaining democracy and national development. The Speaker of the Nasarawa State House Assembly, Danladi Jatau, praised the press for its role in sustaining Nigeria's 25-year uninterrupted democracy and called for continued support for initiatives promoting good governance.

Other speakers at the event stressed the need for responsible journalism to foster social cohesion and collaboration between the media and the public for effective performance.
