US Bill Proposes Sanctions Against Kwankwaso, Others Over Religious Freedom Violations in Nigeria

The US has introduced a bill titled the "Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act 2026," proposing sanctions like visa bans and asset freezes against individuals and groups in Nigeria involved in religious freedom violations. The bill, introduced by US Congressman Riley Moore and co-sponsored by Rep.

Chris Smith, specifically targets former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the Fulani ethnic nomad militia associated with Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN). The legislation also calls for assessing whether certain Fulani militias meet the criteria for designation as foreign terrorist organizations under American law.

The bill aims to reinforce America's stance in protecting persecuted Christians and vulnerable communities in Nigeria, particularly in the Middle Belt region. This move follows previous US actions, including the designation of Nigeria as a country of particular concern for severe violations of religious freedom.

The bill is expected to undergo congressional review in the coming months.
