U.S. Congress Advocates Nigeria Pact Against Terrorism

The U.S. Congress is pushing for a comprehensive bilateral agreement with Nigeria aimed at protecting vulnerable Christian communities and dismantling jihadist terror networks while countering Chinese and Russian influence in the region.

Congressman Rilei Moor, in a statement on Tuesday, highlighted the importance of holding perpetrators of violence accountable and commended President Donald Trump's decision to redesignate Nigeria as a country of particular concern in October 2025. This designation, first made in 2020, was reinstated due to ongoing violence against Christians, including attacks by armed Fulani militia and terrorist groups.

The Congress has recommended visa bans and asset freezes on individuals and groups violating religious freedoms in Nigeria. The proposed agreement includes co-funding humanitarian assistance and strengthening early warning mechanisms to address violence.

The Congress emphasizes the need for Nigeria to demonstrate political will to protect its vulnerable communities and eliminate jihadist activities.
