US, Nigeria Launch Digital Platform for Nok Artefacts

On Tuesday, the US government and the Nigerian Federal Government unveiled a digital heritage platform designed to preserve over 250 ancient Nok artefacts. The project, launched in Abuja, features a documentary highlighting the culture and history of the Nok civilization.

US Ambassador Keith Heffern emphasized the importance of technology in cultural preservation and combating illicit trafficking of heritage objects. The initiative includes upgrading the Nok Museum and training 50 Nigerian youth in advanced digital preservation skills, aiming to reach 50,000 people nationwide.

The platform, built primarily with American technology, incorporates non-fungible token (NFT) tracking to improve the authenticity and traceability of artefacts. The US has invested $1.2 million over the past five years in cultural heritage preservation projects across 21 Nigerian states.

Minister of Art, Culture, and Tourism Hannatu Musa Musawa noted that the project fulfills part of a grant agreement signed with the US Embassy in February 2025, aiming to ensure cultural records remain accessible even when artefacts are at risk.
