US Boosts Arms and Intelligence Support to Nigeria Against IS-Linked Militants

The United States has ramped up its military assistance to Nigeria by delivering materials and sharing intelligence to aid in the fight against IS-linked militants. Lt.

Gen. John Brennan of the US Africa Command revealed this during an interview, emphasizing a more forceful approach to target extremist groups across Africa.

The US-Nigeria joint work group has been established to enhance cooperation, with recent American airstrikes targeting militant strongholds in northwestern Nigeria. The support includes intelligence sharing and backing Nigerian air operations against insurgent groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP.

Concerns over the complex security situation in Nigeria, including reported mass killings, have prompted calls for increased protection of all communities. Despite challenges like poverty and weak state presence, the US airstrikes aim to weaken militant operations in the region.

The spread of extremist groups in the Sahel region and West Africa remains a growing concern, necessitating continued collaboration between the US and countries like Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
