USCIS Outlines Responsibilities for Green Card Holders

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has detailed four responsibilities that every foreigner must fulfill after obtaining a Green Card, which grants permanent residency in the United States. First, permanent residents are required to obey all laws at federal, state, and local levels without exception.

Second, they must file income tax returns and report earnings to the US Internal Revenue Service and relevant state tax authorities, similar to American citizens. Third, while they are expected to support the democratic structure of the US government, Green Card holders are explicitly prohibited from voting in any elections.

Lastly, male permanent residents aged 18 to 25 must register with the Selective Service, which maintains information on individuals who may be called for a national military draft. USCIS also notes that Green Card holders have the right to live and work in the US indefinitely, provided they do not engage in conduct that could lead to removal under immigration law.
