U.S. to Designate Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as Terrorists

The United States government announced plans to designate the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization, with the designation expected to take effect on March 16, 2026. This decision was disclosed in a press statement issued by the U.S.

Department of State, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating that the group has engaged in acts of violence against civilians during the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

Rubio further claimed that fighters linked to the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood are involved in mass killings. The group has previously been sanctioned by the U.S. government, with connections to the Al Baraa Bin Malik Brigade, which was designated in September 2025.

Rubio also accused Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of providing support for extremist activities. The designation will empower the U.S. government to impose sanctions aimed at restricting the group's operational and financial resources, in accordance with U.S. law.
