Georgia Grants Nnamdi Kanu Honorary Citizenship Amidst Nigerian Legal Battle

The US state of Georgia has granted Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), honorary citizenship and recognized him as a goodwill ambassador. Kanu, who is currently serving a life sentence in Nigeria for terrorism charges, was declared an honorary citizen by Georgia's Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, on January 16, 2026.

The proclamation was received on Kanu's behalf by former Nigerian ambassador to South Africa, Uchenna Ajulu. This move highlights the ongoing political tensions and activism surrounding Kanu's cause for Biafran independence.
