Victor Osimhen Returns to Nigeria After AFCON Withdrawal

Victor Osimhen, the Galatasaray striker, arrived in Nigeria on September 22, 2026, on a private jet, despite withdrawing from the Super Eagles squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures. Osimhen was initially named in coach Eric Chelle's 24-man selection but was ruled out after failing to recover from a groin injury sustained during a match against Istanbul Basaksehir.

His withdrawal was confirmed after he missed Galatasaray's 4-0 loss to Trabzonspor, highlighting his unfitness. Taiwo has been named as his replacement.

Nigeria is set to host Madagascar in Uyo on September 25, 2026, before traveling to face Guinea-Bissau four days later. Instead of resting abroad, Osimhen flew into Nigeria alongside Junior Olaitan, a Benin international playing for Besiktas in Turkey.

Following the international break, Osimhen is expected to return to action for Galatasaray against Kasimpasa.
